K-9 Hondo, a 7-year-old Belgian Malinois and member of the Herriman Police Department, died in the line of duty on February 13th 2020 after serving as a Police K-9 since 2015.
The U.S. Marshal’s Violent Fugitive Apprehension Team were in pursuit of a wanted fugitive, 41-year-old Brian Francis Filion, according to Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal Brandon Holt.
Filion was being sought in connection with a homicide investigation from earlier in the month in North Ogden (UT).
The Fugitive Apprehension Team is composed of both local and federal agencies, which K-9 Hondo and his handler Sgt. Ben Ricks of the Herriman Police Department were a part of.
According to Chief Holt, officers spotted Filion exiting an apartment building and the team attempted to place the suspect under arrest. When authorities approached Filion, he began to run, and K-9 Hondo was released to chase down the suspect.
Sadly, during the confrontation with the suspect, K-9 Hondo was struck by gunfire in the sternum. He was immediately transferred to a local clinic for the sustained gunshot, but succumbed to his injuries.
K-9 Hondo’s police career started in 2015 when he was with the Unified Police Department, where he eventually transferred over to the Herriman Police Department in 2018. Considering the age of K-9 Hondo, the accomplished K-9 was on the verge of retirement from the force.
While it’s heartbreaking to know that K-9 Hondo died in the line of duty, his actions that night likely saved the lives of many officers. Because of him, officers were able go home to their families and loved ones that day – and a wanted fugitive is no longer on the streets. NOTE: Filion was found dead a short time later.
Our Founder and CEO personally reached out to Sgt. Ricks, Hondo's handler, and requested permission to name this bag in honor of his fallen K-9 partner. A portion of the proceeds of every Hondo Patrol Bag sold will go into a fund personally set up by our CEO Suresh Madhavan to purchase ballistic vests for police K-9s in need.
